COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITES

🧩 What Had Happened?

Great for introducing/practising Past Perfect.

Give students strange situations:

When Marta arrived home, the door was open and the TV was on.

Pairs have to invent what had happened before:

Someone had broken into the house.
Her brother had forgotten to close the door.
Her dog had turned on the TV. 😂

Then compare explanations and vote for the funniest/most believable one.

🔎 What had happened? — Past Simple vs Past Perfect Simple

  • When I arrived at school, everyone was outside.
  • When I opened my bag, my laptop wasn't there.
  • When we got to the restaurant, the police were there.
  • When I woke up, I had 27 missed calls.
  • When the teacher entered the classroom, everyone went silent.

🎲 Past-Tense Speed Dating

Topics:

  • something funny that happened last week
  • your last holiday
  • a time you got lost
  • your best birthday
  • an embarrassing moment
  • something surprising that happened at school
  • a time something went wrong

After two minutes: CHANGE PARTNERS!

🕵️ The Interrogation — ALL the tenses

Tell them:

Yesterday at 8:30 pm, somebody stole the answers to tomorrow's English exam.

Groups of 4. One is the detective; three are suspects.

The detective has to discover:

  • what they did
  • what they had done before
  • what they had been doing
  • their usual behaviour/habits

Questions:

Where were you at 8:30?
What had you done before you went there?
How long had you been studying?
Had you spoken to anyone before that?
Did you use to stay at school that late?

Then the detective decides whose story is suspicious.

Rotate roles.
